What does being ‘professional’ mean ?

by Shweta Ramkumar

Recently I’ve been watching and listening to the incredible work by Dr. Rangan Chatterjee👨‍⚕️ (and have developed a massive crush on him too 😍).

His podcast, Youtube channel, appearance on “Doctor in the House” and my previous Live Stream with my friend Coralie Ponsinet got me thinking about what it means to be ‘professional’ in the healthcare space.

Aside from the standard ethical and moral code of conduct that’s indispensable in any role in the healthcare field, professionalism has always been equated with external factors that a person working in the field brings – their appearance👨🏾‍💼, their accolades👩‍🎓, their work experience, how much they do things ‘by the book’ 📖and how knowledgeable 👨‍🏫they are.

However, in nearly all the videos of Dr Chatterjee on Youtube, comments were left saying how caring, compassionate, attentive a listener 👂and kind he was, unlike other healthcare workers they’ve consulted with. This was despite him wearing casual clothes 🚶🏻‍♂️, not having a stethoscope 🩺 a notepad, script book or pen and not focusing solely on his experience, knowledge and achievements.

Now more than ever, people crave for authenticity, genuine intimate human connection🤝, being heard, understood, respected and accepted for who they are. Healthcare professionals should no longer hesitate to show the human side of themselves, be open and vulnerable, demonstrate empathy and compassion, listen actively, respect every patient’s individual needs and challenges and personalise treatment plans that are beyond what they learnt traditionally through textbooks.

Additionally, the realm of unconventional medicine that’s defies and at times complements principles of modern medicine is gaining popularity with several success stories. Therefore its vital that practitioners of modern medicine incorporate elements of that in order to give the patient a more holistic, customised treatment experience rather than just quick fixes through pills 💊and similar forms of therapy.
