Happy easter

Happy Easter (or FEASTer in my case) to everyone.

Festivals and food have always gone hand in hand for me. As mentioned previously, over commercialisation and excessive consumption now seem to be the essence of all festivals and while that has never resonated with me being a staunch minimalist, indulging in festive culinary delights is something I have always looked forward to during these times.

Food has traditionally been a powerful tool in bringing people from all walks of life together and strengthening cultural integration, diversity and exposing people to various culinary nuances. Growing up, I was rarely exposed to cuisines outside of where I was raised and preparing, cooking and eating food was never taught to me in a fun, engaging manner.  It made me a fussy eater in my early childhood and resistant to helping family members prepare and cook food. However, my passion for cooking, experimenting with and savouring cuisines began when I moved out of home at 24.  I used recipes from the internet to cook for myself and developed an appetite for trying cuisines from all over the world (though I still don’t feel confident to cook for others).  I am a self-confessed foodie now and have a penchant for Asian cuisines due to their flavour, variety and the feeling of comfort they give you.  Traveling extensively only enhanced my love for sampling local cuisine everywhere I go and I’m a huge fan of authentic street food. 

Pre-COVID, my friend Vera Simonov hosted monthly potluck lunches at where people brought dishes from one chosen country such as Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Germany etc.  This was an enjoyable eye-opening experience for me and I now never miss an opportunity to attend events where I am exposed to world cuisines.  I also happen to live in a city in Australia that is multicultural, centered around food and caters to people of all diets, food restrictions and culinary preferences.

If food is one of your life’s pleasures, enjoy cooking (or learning about it) or sharing cuisines you were brought up with, don’t hesitate to use it as a tool to build connections with like-minded people wherever you travel to or live in, within the confines of your dietary requirements of course.   This is one of the many ways in which we exercise our muscle of curiosity; open our minds, push our comfort zone and expose ourselves to people from different walks of life that live, cook, eat and thrive in ways different from us.  It will make us feel less alone and the common thread of food will be the common denominator and connecting factor uniting us with people from other cultures
